Marvin Gaye & Kim Weston – It Takes Two (1967) #4 R&B USA, #14 Pop USA, #16 UK Singles

This awesome single, composed by Sylvia Moy and William “Mickey” Stevenson, was the follow-up single to the 1964 Marvin & Kim duet  “What Good Am I Without You”  that only charted #61 on both the R&B and Pop Charts.

But this second duet by the pair, “It Takes Two,”  became a huge smash in 1967. Unfortunately, by  the time it was peaking on the charts,  Kim and her husband (producer and the one and the same co-writer of this song)  William “Mickey” Stevenson, had moved to another label (MGM) just as Mary Wells had done. Therefore the “Take Two” LP was to be the one and only set for Marvin and yet another duet partner!

Nevertheless, this  remains the song for which Weston is best known, and was the only single to be taken from the album “Take Two” released in December 1966.

Born, Agatha Natalie Weston,  Kim Weston had been a supporting artist on the Marvin Gaye Revue concerts before being selected by Motown as the next Gaye duet partner, after both Mary Wells and Oma Page Heard had left the label.

TRIVIA: This single was to became Gaye’s most successful duet single to date until his classic duets with Tammi Terrell outperformed it.

This song also turned out to be Gaye’s first major hit in the UK.
