Lloyd Thaxton dies at 81; zany host of popular TV dance show

Lloyd Thaxton, the host of a popular Los Angeles TV dance show in the 1960s who memorably injected a visual zaniness into his daily rock ‘n’ roll party for teenagers, died Sunday. He was 81.

Thaxton, who later became the Emmy Award-winning producer and director of TV’s long-running consumer advocacy program “Fight Back! With David Horowitz,” died of multiple myeloma at his home in Studio City, said his wife, Barbara. He had been diagnosed with the disease in May.

Be sure to watch the tribute clip that accompanies the article. And check out this one from “The New Lloyd Thaxton Show” in 1966 with Thaxton lipsynching to Georgie Fame’s “Getaway.” Gotta love YouTube for this wonderful memory!

OMG I just found out this news while weekend blog surfing tonight on Lloyd Thaxton’s blog.

Mr. Thaxton passed on earlier this month and I don’t recall hearing about it on the news. Shame on the media for not doing better on sharing this sad news with us and thank goodness for the internet.

I have such great childhood memories of watching “The Lloyd Thaxton Show” on our old black and white set (I was shocked to see the color clip at the LA Times Website!)  with our rooftop antenna that occassionally had to be adjusted for clear viewing.  I most remember the silly skits that Thaxton did between playing the latest pop songs.  He was quite a character and I looked forward to seeing what he would do next on the show more than watching the teenagers dance.

Thanks for everthing Mr. Thaxton. My condolences to the family and may he R.I.P.
