“Any Day Now (My Wild Beautiful Bird)” – Performed by Chuck Jackson (1962)

Chuck Jackson – Any Day Now (My Wild Beautiful Bird) (1962)

This is one of my favorite Burt Bacharach songs and I understand that it is one of his personal favorites as well. Bacharach had his protege Jackson record it initially, but it has been covered by many.  My favorite cover is by Eddie Kendrick from one of his solo LPS after leaving the Temptations: he “kills it!”

Chuck Jackson’s original was one of his highest charting singles at #2 on Billboard R&B and #23 Billboard Pop.

He was “discovered” when he opened for soul legend Jackie Wilson at the Apollo Theater. He signed a recording contract with Scepter Records. His first single, “I Don’t Want to Cry”, which he co-wrote, was his first hit (1961). The song charted on both the R&B and pop charts. In 1962, Jackson’s recording of “Any Day Now”, the Burt Bacharach-Bob Hilliard classic, became a huge hit. He was so successful that in 1967, he bought up the time on his contract from from Scepter and moved to Motown Records. There he recorded a number of successful singles, including “Are You Lonely for Me Baby” and “Honey Come Back.” He later recorded for All Platinum and other labels, but with minimal success.

Several of Jackson’s songs later became successful hits for other artists; Ronnie Milsap covered Michael McDonald had a huge hit with his cover of Jackson’s “I Keep Forgettin'”. “Any Day Now” in 1982, and reached #1 on the Country and Adult Contemporary charts. (SOURCE)

Such a beautifully haunting Burt Bacharach melody with great lyrics by Bob Hillard:

Any Day Now (My Wild Beautiful Bird)

Any day now I will hear you say “Goodbye, my love”
And you’ll be on your way
Then my wild beautiful bird, you will have flown, oh
Any day now I’ll be all alone, whoa-oa-oa-oa-oa

Any day now, when your restless eyes meet someone new
Oh, to my sad surprise
Then the blue shadows will fall all over town, oh
Any day now love will let me down, whoa-oa-oa-oa-oa

Oh my wild beautiful bird, you will have flown, oh
Any day now I’ll be all alone

I know I shouldn’t want to keep you
If you don’t want to stay-ay
Until you go forever
I’ll be holding on for dear life
Holding you this way
Begging you to stay

Any day now when the clock strikes “Go”
You’ll call it off
And then my tears will flow
Then the blue shadows will fall all over town, oh
Any day now love will let me down cuz you won’t be around

Don’t fly away, my beautiful bird
Don’t, don’t fly away

Here is a video for you to enjoy Jackson lip synching to his hit on a 1965 Burt Bacharach TV show: it was provided to YouTube by Jean’s Music Blog.

  1. Good choice! This has always been one of my faves, right from its release. You found a great emotive photo to go with it, too!

  2. Hi Deborah –

Thanks for checking in. They just don’t seem create songs with beautiful melodys like this anymore — do they? Bacharach & David and Smokey Robinson were in a class all their own weren’t they? Just simply awesome!
