“Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag” – Performed by James Brown (1965)

James Brown – Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag (1965)

“Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag” was awarded the 1965 Grammy for Best R&B Recording. This song sounded nothing like any of the previous seven R&B Grammy winners and, in fact,  it was considered the start of a whole new musical genre, “Funk,”  that became James Brown’s signature style.

Brown started out in Gospel, then progressed to singing R&B, then by making it rougher turned into into something new called  “Soul” (e.g. Please, Please, Please).  He then turned “Soul” into something entirely new called “Funk.”  As were many of Mr. Brown’s songs, “Bag” was recorded in one-take: the run through is what was released!

It was the first Billboard Top 10 hit for the Godfather, reaching #7,  even though he had been performing with his Famous Flames since the mid-fifties and had achieved stardom on the Black community’s “chitlin circuit” for his stunning live performances and the 1963 classic recording release of “Live at the Apollo” — a #2 R&B Album.

The two-part single “PGABNB” was also a number-one R&B hit, topping the charts for eight weeks.

The album of the same name went #2 on the Billboard R&B Album chart in 1965 and #26 on the Billboard Pop Album chart in 1966.

In addition to winning the Grammy “PGABNB” was also inducted in to the 1999 Grammy Hall of Fame and it was ranked number 72 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All time in 2004.

Here’s a tribute site to the “Godfather of Soul”, The Hardest Working Man in Show Business”, Soul Brother Number One, Mr Dynamite — JAMES BROWN!

Enjoy the music.
